Welcome to the Spring 2013 season

Hello all- I am looking forward to starting the season this week. We are aiming to keep Wednesdays as our practice day as we had in the fall, and using West Newton Common. I am still waiting for NGS to give us a fields permit that lists the time that we can begin using the field. We don't want to overlap with baseball:) The goal may be to hold practice from 5:00-6:30, if I recall the baseball players were done by that time last spring, but we may need to be flexible - I will keep you posted, but let's aim for 5:00-6:30 this week, we meet for first practice on April 3! Our first game is April 6.You will find our schedule on http://newtongirlssoccer.org/home/schedules/intramural-5th6th-grades/ it has not yet posted, but the info will be at this link. We are again playing at Warren complex on Washington Street in West Newton. We will be utilizing three of the field surfaces. We will be sharing this complex with IM 4 and IM 7/8 which will lend to a great soccer atmosphere on Saturdays, giving us the opportunity to see some of the matches of the older girls as well to cheer on the younger girls! We hope to have a jamboree on May 18, the times are TBD.Anyone who needs a new jersey, please use your Blue Sombrero account to purchase one (through registration). We will be using this website as our central information spot - feel free to post photos or comments from our games, use it to contact each other to coordinate any transportation needs. So you will be receiving emails from "Blue Sombrero" if I send notices via this page (advantage, you can find everyone's contact info on the site and view messages re: weather, DOC sessions, maybe we'll try to go to a Breakers game again) and from me [email protected]

Please remember for all practices and games:
*size 4 ball
* shin guards with tall socks OVER the shin guards, no loose pant legs please
* cleats
* NO JEWELRY, no earrings, hard headbands, rings, bracelets, hard hair clips, NADA!
* WATER you will be doing a lot of work during games and practices and for safety and good health, please bring adequate water!
* layers - as this weather is still strange - you may want to bring a bag with layers - and of course you know we often practice in the rain if the fields are dry enough/open, so you bring a wind/rain jacket
* hair up and off the face, if you can't see the field, it is hard to plan and communicate with your team. Long hair should be braided or in a ponytail, short hair can be held back with a soft headband.
*on game day - JERSEY and shorts. If it is cold out, you are permitted to wear UnderArmour type long sleeve shirts and leggings under your uniform - running pants, anything with a loose cuff is not permitted for safety.

A reminder on sportsmanship: every player is asked to come to games and practices with a good attitude, one focused on learning, encouraging each other, and recognizing the learning opportunity in each scenario. All parents are asked to sit on the opposite side of the field during games, you are welcome to come help at practices if you'd like to learn a bit about our game as well to help with cones for drills. Sideline behavior at the games is of utmost importance, this is regarding players, parents and coaches. My goal as a coach is to train wholesome athletes, ones who operate with pride and self confidence, respecting each other and the rules of the field and to customize each girls' goal so they can see their own growth through the season. The game isn't about winning - it's about teamwork, learning to not take yourself too seriously and have fun! I want the girls to make their own on-field decisions - please refrain from guiding language like "shoot", "pass", etc when attend games. You are encouraged to cheer for players on their efforts and support their energy on the field, "good job", "nice pass", "stick with it", "that was great", etc - recognition for the work they have already done - it gives them the opportunity to focus on their task with the ball or against a player that can be disrupted by the distraction of instructions from the sideline. See you on Wednesday!
